How to choose your field of study: a practical framework

Every week we talk to students who picked a field because a relative suggested it, and to students who picked one because it was trending on YouTube. Both groups end up in our office for the same reason: eighteen months in, the motivation is gone.

The framework we use instead asks three questions. First: what kind of problem can you work on for four hours without noticing the time? Not which subject you like — which activity. Debugging, writing, explaining, building, arguing. Second: what does the entry-level job in this field actually look like day to day? Talk to one person who does it; one conversation beats fifty rankings. Third: what is the realistic cost of being wrong? Some fields transfer well (mathematics, economics), others lock you in early (medicine, architecture).

When you have honest answers to all three, the list of suitable degree programmes usually shrinks from thirty to three — and the choice stops feeling like a lottery.
